Seen this?:  2000 A4 Speedometer stopped, check engine light on

However, the OK in the middle still comes up when the car starts up.
Check engine light stays on.  The speedometer does not show speed -
stays down at zero mph.

I hope I'm not looking at a new $2000 instrument cluster that Audi
probably will slap me with :-(

Any thoughts or ideas appreciated.

Vehicle Speed Sensor bad?
Electronic speedometers need to know what speed the vehicle is travelling at
so an electronic sensor is fitting instead of a speedometer cable.
Probably why that engine light is on also.  ;-)

Just a guess!

I don't think a VSS in the transmission is used any more but I don't
know when that changed.  Speed sensing and traction control commonly use
the same wheel sensors now.

I do see a reference to a Vehicle Speed Sensor in the Audi A4 1996-2001
Bentley, located inside of the transmission but not as easy to access like
the VW Jettas.  :-)
Transmission Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G38
You have to drop the pan to change it.  :-(

Not too positive on this since mine is still working fine.  knock on wood!

AND of course the ABS wheel sensors might be called speed sensors too but I
think they mostly send the information to the ABS module.  ;-)

well, the new Cluster for my TT was about $1400 a couple of years ago... the
sting of that only made worse by a court settlement in favor of owners who had
to have this "repair", within 6 years of car purchase... my purchase, of
course, was 6 years and 2months back, so I got nada.

RESOLVED: Speed sensor needs to be replaced $225 parts and labor.
This is a quote from an actual dealership. Thank goodness it was not
the actual cluster!!  The error codes also showed that the Oxygen
Sensor also needed replacing.

Thanks all!

Glad that the problem has been located.  That is usually the hardest part of
the job!  ;-)
This is the speed sensor inside of the automatic transmission right?  So you
will get some new fluid if this is an automatic.
Not bad on the cost of the parts and labor I guess.
But at that price I would think it is only an external sensor on a manual
transmission.

Which is it?  auto or manual?
