Chains and associated parts DO wear. The e30 M3 cars recommend a
complete chain, pulleys and tensioners change at 100k miles for example.
Noisy engines can be an indicator of a worn timing chain. Having said
that you have a relatively new car so I wouldn't worry unless it has
done 50k per year or similar.
