'01 X5, 3.0L auto.  On startup there is a loud, high pitched
whining/whistling sound coming from the front of the engine.  After warm
up the sound generally disappears.  Fan belts are new, ~4 months old.
Could it be the water pump? clutch fan? power steering pump?  All fluids
are topped off.

It's probably the air pump that only runs when the engine is cold.
