Hope you kept the old one as it's easy to swap the motor assembly.
Have you tried pushing it while someone operates the control? They do
sometimes just jam - although the motor will usually run for a short time
to take up the slack if you reverse it. Other possibility is a dirty
selector switch. They often don't get used for years.
