I like the look of this car but why only 15K miles in 4 years of
driving. Does anyone recognise this X5? What reasons can I expect the
dealer to give for this low milage? Should I expect to speak with the
previous owner?

Unusual but not unheard of. My Jepp only does about 4-5K a year, my X5 about
the same. Combination of working at home and two cars = low mileage. Wife
uses the X5 as her main car she takes kids to school and goes to work twice
a week, total maybe 60 miles tops most weeks.
If it has a FBMWSH any dealer can verify mileage at time of each service so
you've got a good history. Sounds like a decent spec car for the money, just
be aware its pre-facelift (I think) and the 4.4 is not very frugal if you
boot it! Other than that looks good. HPI it just to make sure.

Check that it really does have FSH and not that it's due it's first
service in 1000 miles. It could well eb that the oil etc needs
changing on a time basis even if the mileage countdown hasn't reached 0

Yes of course that is a point I would not have thought of. However as
it is shorter than my 540 tourer I don't think I will be going further
with it and instead I will be spending some money having new hydraulic
tappets fitted on my present car thanks.

I was concerned it may have been in a garage being repaired after some
major accident. However I have just noticed something that has made it
less attractive now. It is much shorter than my 540 tourer and I need
the extra space for a couple of wheelchairs so I am searching for
another 540 tourer with low mileage and I cannot find one so far.

Plenty of reasons. Rich owner who only uses it when it's needed and has
something more suitable for everyday? Or works in the city and commutes by
PT? School run car?

Well yes but then I would have expected the price to be higher and the
same car is advertised on autotrader £1500 less. Both pics on the
adverts show the same registration number!

I dunno what it should be worth. Some say the market for this type of
vehicle is small - most want the diesels.

I would have liked it but I hadn't realised it was 9" shorter than my
motor and that amount of space makes the difference when carrying two
wheelchairs. I defo wouldn't have a diesel and the later model series
5 has run flat tyres and I don't want that either. I would not even be
looking to change my car if it wasn't needing work done on the tappets
as the car suits me fine in just about every way.

If that's the only reason... what's your car worth, what will the
repairs cost?

The car is probably worth about £8K and the repairs could cost
anything up to £2K at the worst if I just have the left bank of
tappets replaced. Apparently it is not possible to pin point which
tappet is noisy so all the left side will have to be replaced.

2K? Good grief. Have you had more than one estimate? Is the noise constant
or does it change with the engine hot?
I haven't worked on a BMW V-8, but on my old Rover it is possible to
identify which tappet is noisy with a stethoscope. But with those you
replace them all anyway - if one is noisy the others will follow.

I haven't had a quote Dave. I am just guessing by the way the mech
kept saying it would be very expensive. I have now established it is
one tappet per valve so that means 16 in the left bank. The problem I
have is why is the tappet noisey after just 67K miles. I had 130K
miles on my last M62 engine and it was quieter than my present engine.
I have taken note of all posts and now I am wondering what is the UK
equivalent of Magic Mystery Oil? I would be willing to try it rather
than have to job done. I am a trained mech but very much out of date
these days and putting any old substance through my engine rather
alarms me. The difficulty is deciding if it is a sticky tappet or a
worn out tappet. Where does the oil supply end under pressure?
Obviously it would be in the valve train area and I am wondering if I
am losing oil pressure towards the end of its flow under pressure?

Ask BMW - you have the reg. If you are serious the vendor should give you
VIN as well.

Pose-mobile for a townie? Real car is a 645i or a Bently GT. Works abroad
a lot. Job in the city and commutes by train. Weekend car. Retired owner.
All sorts of reasons.
Look carefully underneath. Has it really been used off road? If so pass
by, The X5 is OK to get out of a muddy field at a gymkana, but a Range Rover
it ain't.
My main caution would be is that this very low milage car is od retail
quality and normally main dealers would buy it in to resell as BMW approved
at a huge mark up e.g. Hexagon have got an '04 with 11k @ £29k. Instead here
it is with a small back street outfit in Essex. Why not make an insultingly
low offer?
Having driven one of these - its a nice ride, but the 4.4 in this body is
just going to get you into trouble.

Yes I am afraid it will not suit me after all as it hasn't the room I
need in the back. A 540 tourer is all that will suit me and there
aren't that many available atm so I will probably have mine repaired.
It would not have been a problem a few years ago as I would have done
it myself but that is beyond my ability now. Getting old and senile.

maybe its a repaired wreck. have a bodyshop check before you buy.
maybe the owner had too many toys and didnt have too much time. maybe
its an old lady who only drove it to church.....her local church of
satan to perform voodoo rituals and repeatedly impale her groin with
rotting cucumbers while being bathed in sour goat milk....... anyways
check with a reputable bodyshop before you buy.. if the dealer has
nothing to hide he may well welcome the opportunity to make a sale.

My suspicions were aroused by the fact the dealer also has a body
shop. Anyway it proved to be unsuitable as it was shorter than my 540
tourer and I hadn't reckoned on that.

You can check any BMW to see if its digital milage has been altered. By
running the self test mode, on start up. To do this, hold in the milage
counter reset button as you start the engine. If the milage has been
altered or "corrected" then a red light will come on next to the milage.

That is a very handy tip to be remembered.
