I have seen a car for sale in the UK which has a couple of years left
on a service pack! Does this mean the car gets serviced free or is
there some catch whereby I have to pay a stupid booking in fee or pay
for oil and inhibiter at Lind prices?

If its a desiel then yes, it refers to "all inclusive" servicing for the
first 3(?) years. A relative just bought an 05 330d which has a year left.
AFAIK it really if FOC, no catches.

Well that sounds OK then. However I think it is academic now as the
trade in price was far too low. It was a 545 tourer for GBP 25995
which I felt was a fair price but the salesman wanted my car (2000 540
tourer) and GBP 20K and I was sticking at my car and GBP 15K. The gap
is too wide to negotiate:-(
