I would like to know how to get a socket on the upper starter bolt on
a 1988 BMW 325IX.

From under the car using two long extensions. Your ratchet will be behind
the gearshift lever on the drivers side.
Put a box end wrench on the front side. It will wedge against the starter
to stop it from turning.
Good Luck getting the nut back on during reassembly - that's really the
challenging part.

That sounds like hard-won experience?
I know it's a long shot, but I'll ask anyway. Do you know of a decent
source of mechanical/workshop manual-type information specifically for
the 325iX?

A guy on www.bmwboard.com replaced his starter
recently, and it looks like same exact car.
Are you AWD_Guy on www.BMWboard.com ?
Looks like you will need to take off the control arm.
