I think the spec' on my first 735i (a 1982 model I bought in 1985) was
better (five speed [manual] box for a start). Funny how even after a
quarter of a century US car makers still haven't caught up!
OTOH the 1982 UK list price for the BMW new was over ¡ê18k, probably over ¡ê20k
with [the optional] AC. Exchange rates at the time were similar to now, so
that was about $37 - more than a new Buick costs now :-(
Of course US cars have legendary[ily bad] bad handling, which is perhaps why
the car has one feature so that it is ready for when it inevitably slides
off the road: -

etc.

Funny you say that - when I was a kid of 19 - 22 I wanted a Dodge Challenger.
Fell in love with it at he London Motor Show. Loved it in the film "Vanishing
Point" (crap film but lovely car). I would have settled for the 340 but wanted
the 426 Hemi.............
However when one looks at the spec' the car was really retro.
Drum brakes as standard
Cast Iron brake and clutch master cylinders,
Cast iron rear brake cylinders.
Uninteresting dash and steering wheel
Very uncomfortable seats (but look Ok)
Bad visibility our of rear 1/4
Novel front suspension being torsion bars borrowed from the UK Morris Minor/
Wolsely 1500/ Reily 1.5. and probably nicked from the VW Beetle initially.
Never really negotiated bendy roads and stopping was a heart attack situation.
the new Challenger/Barracuda has caught up but at what cost (Mercedes buy
in/out) when they could have poached the best of European engineering in 1969
and gone with decent front suspension (coil over shox) Rack & Pinion steering +
power, Big efficient disc brakes on the front at least (Jaguar had them on the
back at that time too) and decent seats + power windows and an interesting dash
with real dials giving real information.
Dodge Charger was in a similar state of decline at the time too.
Too little too late - the love affair with US cars in the UK (at least) has gone
downhill ever since then with the exception of Corvette & Camero - Cadillac use
to be a bit OTT but still, even now, garish and loud and no finesse or class
whatsoever!
I'll stick with BMW however the Chrysler 300 sounds interesting if it really has
a Hemi Engine but the depreciation must be astronomical (or comical).
