Need good input on tires

The Continental tires on my 323 still have good tread but I'm sick of the
crummy
things.   Wheels need balancing, but I'm not gonna bother, just get new
tires.
Continental tires apparently behave extremely poorly on wet roads while
going around curves.   Mine have been so bad that I almost wonder how
they could be legally sold in America.   A tire guy told me right after I
bought them that they were terrible in the rain...he spoke the gospel!

What should I get?   I'm not a hell driver in the beamer, but not an old
lady either....average middle-aged driver I guess.    I'm thinking of
buying at Big 10 Tires.  They sold me a great set of cheap tires for
my old car, and they still don't need balancing after several years.
I know you can't go wrong with Michelin, but pricey.  How about
Bridgestone?  I've been to the Big 10 site and that seems to be
their major brands for "regular" tires.

Keep it under 60 and tire quality doesn't mean a thing. Just buy the
cheapest.

Stupid response! If the guy was in Euroland (inc UK) it would be illegal apart
from being totally reckless and stupid.

Oh! I forgot you are in the US so please carry on and kill yourself along with
several innocent bystanders or other drivers when you decide that you are late
one day and start driving at 100 mph and the tires disintegrate.

Buy tires that match the max speed of the car or buy a car that matches your
wallet.

Perhaps so, but I have it impossible to keep my BMW going that slow.

My car came with Pirelli, but they were not satisfactory.
I replace the original tires with Michelin.

You can't generalize like that between manufacturers. Tire quality is very model
-- and sometimes even size -- specific.

And while I have always loved high-performance Pirellis for their wet weather
performance and currently have them on two of my three cars, I would say that
"most people" favor Michelin over Pirelli. Pirelli is very little known among
the general public.

The all season type (don't remember the exact model).

Excessive noise that sounded like bad spots on one or more tires.
One tire delaminated at 20000 miles.  It had tread separation.
The replacement Michelin are noise free.

Not if their Pirellis delaminated during a long trip where the car sometimes
reached 80 mph.  It certainly is
hard to keep the car at the speed limit.  I am not interested in risking
tire problems at such speeds.
Neither of these sets of tires are performance models; I would expect to
performance tires to need
replacement at about that mileage.

My 740i runs on Pirelli P6000 and no problems even at 60 and 155 but I always
keep it below 140 when wet.

I have no input on Big 10...  I share your opinion of Continentals, I
had a set stock on my GTI 1.8T and I don't understand what posessed VW
to put rolling bricks like those on a supposedly "sporty" car.  I
often inadvertantly chirped the tires backing out of parking spaces,
they were that pathetic.  wet, dry, it didn't matter, they sucked.  I
replaced them with Michelin Pilots and couldn't be happier.

If you don't want to spend the $$$ for Michelins, I've heard that
Kelly-Springfield makes a decent "bargain" tire.  Can't be any worse
than Contis, anyway, and they're a lot cheaper.  I have had good luck
with Kumhos as well.

I'd recommend checking out the Tire Rack web site.  They have comparative
road tests on most of the tires (and they often use the 3 series for the
comparisons).  Also user reviews/ratings.

http://www.tirerack.com/

I put Pirelli P-zero Neros on my 5er.  Reasonable price, the promise of good
durability, and some good past experiences with their product.  Good (not
great) grip and excellent in the rain.

Bridgestone makes an excellent tire.  Also the Goodyear F-1 D3 has gotten
great reviews.

I replaced the overpriced Michelin Pilot Sports with the Goodyear Eagle
F1 GS-D3's.  The performance was marginally better (the Pilots are
already great!) and the wear was reduced significantly.  Wet traction
also seemed better but it's difficult to compare new tires to the old
ones at that point.  No snow here so that wasn't a factor for me.  These
were on my '02 330i w/sport package and 19" wheels.  I saved $100 per
tire but still dropped $1000 with installation, etc.

You don't say which Continental tires you have on your 323.  Are they
performance or so-called "all-season" or touring tires?  It can make a big
difference.

The Conti SportContact2 performance tires on my E46 are wonderful in the
rain as were the OEM Conti SportContacts, but if you want to switch brands,
try the Goodyear F1 GS-D3.  Of course all of these are unsuitable for snow &
ice if that's an issue where you live.

Seconded.
I have Conti Sport Contacts all round on my 528i E39. IMO they are excellent
tyres in the wet or dry. They'll be replaced by the same when the time
comes.

Agreed.  I had CSC2 on my A4 and I thought they were very nice, very well
balanced.  Not top of the line performance, but close.  Bridgestone S03 was
a tiny bit better in the dry and wet, but S03 was also hard as a rock.  If
you drive on roads that are less than perfect, stay away from S03.  CSC2 is
way more comfy and quiet, while giving up very little in the performance
department.  Definitely a good wet weather performer.  I am hoping to get
the CSC3 for my e39 when the current crappy Dunlops (SP Maxx) wear out.

I think the ones I had on my GTI were "Touring Contact" and they blew
dead goats.  I honestly think that General tires would have been an
improvement.  I can't believe that those things were legal, they were
that dangerous.

The regular ContiSport Contacts are OK in the rain and I would not
hesitate to buy them again were the price right.

The Michelin PS that came as OEM on my 330i PP are slightly better both
wet and dry.  But both are good-to-great dry road tires IMO.

My new PS2s seem to stick as well or better than the PS's did dry.  They
are supposed to be better in the wet.  We'll see.  However, they provide
far more steering feedback than the PS's (good!) and tramline less (also
good but less important to me).

The best feeling tires I've tried so far are Falkens. Its like the
difference between walking around in a stiff leather dress shoe and
jumping around in sneakers. I mean they just grip the road and don't
slip at all. Not bad in price either.

First off, ignore anything that someone who calls themself "Speeders &
Drunk Drivers Are MURDERERS," says. That screen name should tell you all
you need to know about it.

As for the tires, I'm not familiar with Continental, but in my
experiences, I have found Kelly-Springfield, Cooper and BF Goodrich to
be decent tires that are reasonablly priced. Michelin and Goodyear are
also good, but pricier.

IMNSHO, stay away from Firestone. My first two Tauruses had "Firestone
Supremes," as OEM and they were a royal pain; they would last about
25000 miles or so before they would start to seperate. Switched the cars
to other brands (the Kelly-Springfield for one and Cooper for the other)
and never had to buy a tire for either of those two again.

Yeah; you *can* go wrong with Michelin.  Ask anyone who ever had them
about TRX tires ...

I'm not too enthralled with Bridgestone's quality, although I've had
some very good ones.  I do like Yokohamas a lot.  Both are available
through Tire Rack, which is my #1 choice for all tires on vehicles I
really care about.  Go shopping (lotsa' tools like specs and consumer
surveys as well as independent tests there) at www.tirerack.com and
then pick up the phone to order.  Tell your sales rep that a BMW E28
guy - who was there at South Bend last summer - sent you.

Were you there for the One Lap or just because?  I remember either last
year or the year before I happened to be in SB for the annual Studebaker
swap meet and saw lots of pretty go-fast machinery driving around,
apparently the One Lap was kicking off that weekend.  I'll be up there
again next week; this year the SDC International meet is being held in
SB, but I won't be there all week (got this nasty Real Job thing, you

I was there for BMW "5er Fest" over Memorial Day weekend.  A
celebration of all things E28 ... and E12 for those few diehards who
still like the original 5er.  Tire Rack was and is a sponsor of our
event.  We may welcome later series 5ers in the future, but I'm in no
hurry.  We had ~130 cars in Chattanooga last month.

If you knew anything about BMWs or the newsgroup you would know that an
E28 is already a very old "5 series" model (4 models past) and that it
isn't likely that "E28 Guy" will *ever* get rid of his car.

The other notable thing is that not every man is a slave to his wife as
you apparently are.  I for one never let my wife dictate what cars I
bought and we raised 3 kids.  Maybe if she actually knew anything about
cars I may have included her in the decision making.

The idea that one *needs* a minivan because they have 2 or more kids is
ludicrous.  Kids are small and pack up quite compactly.  Oh, and my wife
doesn't get to tell me to lay off the malt either...  ;-)

I was wondering how long this would take to show up. There's always one in
the group. My wife bought a BMW BECAUSE I had one. I drive the older one,
too. She got a 5er with the intent of having rear seat space for a child,
which we don't have. Screw the minivan/SUV in this age of high gas prices.
The cost/benefit and "perceived" safety just isn't there, either. It's just
American "I need a big honkin' ride to obstruct other driver's view"
thinking. Don't get me wrong, there are times when these vehicles are
useful, but single-passenger, daily-driver is NOT one of them. Get a BMW and
enjoy it. They get better gas mileage than you think, for the 6 cyl, and
still have a lot of pep. Get one a couple of years old, drop the heavy
insurance and car payment, and enjoy the $40k car for less than the price of
a new car. If done right, it's a no-brainer.

One doesn't NEED a minivan - an SUV will also work. :)

Scott, I think you've known me for years in R.A.D (this crossposted to
alt.autos.bmw, too), so you should know better than to ask - at least
of me.  This is my *fourth* E28, and the newest one yet (an '88 ...
and they didn't build 'em later than that).  I can't see me loving any
other car as much as I do the E28 535is.  Even after driving my wife's
'02 Jag X-Type 3.0 Sport 5-speed (a *really* fun car in itself!), when
I climb back into my BMW, I am 'at home'.  So, there won't be a 'new
one' in my foreseeable future unless it's another E28.

As you can see by what she drives, my wife would be the last one
forcing me into a Toyota *again*.  We drove them for the 14 years we
needed dead reliable economical transportation and now - well, life's
too short to drive boring cars.  My last Toyota was an FX-16 - a
pocket rocket disguised as a little black 3-door Japanese snotbox.

Finally, we won't be having "another kid".  And my 10-y-o daughter
loves the old BMW because she gets to sit in the front.  No air bags.

That cover it for ya?

Well, I was really asking a general question and not necessarily to
you specifically. However, I don't think I knew what kind of car you
drove (or I just never paid attention).

Sure. And, if worse comes to worst, you could always go by the nym of
"Motorhead Lawyer." :)

I'm running Yokohama AS430  in 235-45-17 and love them.  Far better
that the pirellis they replaced for handling, ride and noise.

Get round ones.

We put Bridgestone Potenzas on in November, and I really like them.
They were a little greasy for the first 200 miles, but now they're fine.
Very good in the rain as well as the dry.

....Bridgestone Potenza G009!  Man, the car drives like a dream.
I paid about $488 at Big 10, and this included a 4-wheel alignment;
also lifetime balancing. I also get a $50 rebate from Bridgestone.

Cool.  Glad to hear you found a satisfactory product.

I forgot to mention that I have Yoko AVS ES100s on the Porsche and are
happy with them (except in the snow, when I have to switch to winter
tires,) but I guess it's a little late now...
