Hello. New to group.
My father's transmission went out on him on the highway last weekend, and he
needs to replace it. It's an '83 320i with a 5-speed manual Getrag 240.
Anybody know where I can get one of those?
Thanks for any help.

Have you tried calling any local salvage yards?
You may try this:

Never used it, just found it on the net.
That's all I have.

Your local junkyard should have one. They were used on a bunch of models,
and they are very well built and hard to damage. So I would not feel too
bad about getting a junker.
That said... I wonder how his failed, and what he did to make it fail.
What is it doing, and has he done a postmortem yet?
It's actually not hard to repair these things.... it's not that hard just
to pull the case open and do the work yourself. It's not like a typical
modern automatic that needs to be sent to a specialist for a complete
rebuild. On the other hand, junkyard replacements are cheap enough that
you might want to save your time.
