I'm shopping for a '94 or '95 530i with a MT. But I have noticed that there
seems to be conflicting information about passenger side airbags for '94
(all sources agree that dual front airbags were std for '95). Can anyone
point me to a good source that will tell me what the standard safety
equipment was for 1994? Also, for you enthusiasts, what are the issues
(aside from the Nikusil) that I should be looking for?
Thx
Both of my '94 3 Series cars have a passenger side airbag.
My first E36 has been gone to the Big Wrecking Yard in the sky for over two
years now, but my second one sits in the garage waiting for better weather,
and this one has a build date of July '94, which makes it an Early
Production car. My MPV has not got a passenger side airbag, and it's a '93.
Might I suggest you look for a '96 or later because the OBD II engine
management system is superior to the OBD I. If I was looking to replace any
of my cars, or add to my fleet, I'd be looking almost exclusively at the '96
model years and later. I don't think the difference in price between a
'95-ish car and a '96-ish car is going to be a significant factor.

I understand your suggestion, but I like the E34 design much better than the
E39 and the local mechanics swear that the E34s are the among the most
reliable BMWs ever made. Back to the airbags, though. The two '94s I have
driven have had driver's side airbag only while the one '95 I drove had dual
airbags. I wonder if the E36s were on a different passive restraint
schedule. =^(
