E65 Noise

Hi,

Have uk spec 2004 745i (e65) and have noticed a loud chirping noise, a bit
like a slipping fanbelt when the engine is hot. At first, i thought it was
fanbelts or pulleys at front of engine but today removed the front lower
engine cover (plastic), lower engine cover (metal - where oil filter is
situated) and lower gearbox cover. On the underside of the gearbox /engine
there are a series of rubber grommets which can be removed and the flywheel
can be seen spinning. The noise seems to be coming from that region. It does
not make the noise with the engine cold and when the engine is revved, the
noise disappears until the revs fall to about 1500.

I have also noticed that sometimes the car is a bit slow to pick up from a
standing start but frankly, i am not impressed with the gearbox performance
at all which seems to show a lot of the pick-up problems experienced by a
lot of drivers on BMW e65 forums. Could this be a low gearbox oil problem, I
had similar problems (but no noise) with my previous e38 although i did have
an obvious oil leak. There doesnt seem to be any trace of oil leak on the
e65. I was wondering if that when the engine is revved the oil is being
pumped around whatever is making the noise. Anyone any experience?

Can say about the NOISE without listening to the car however the performance is
a common "fault" of the gearbox ECU remembering how you drive or if a secondhand
car how the previous owners drove it.

Read this carefully:

Get in the car and close the door

insert key/fob into socket (DO NOT START ENGINE)

DO NOT PUT FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL

Press the engine start button - all idiot lights should come on but engine will
not start.

Press foot hard down to the floor on the accelerator pedal and leave it on the
floor for 25 seconds (THAT IS 25 SECONDS)

After 25 seconds release the accelerator and press the engine stop/start button
let the car sit there for a FULL 2 minutes - this is imperative.

Without removing the key/fob - now start the car and go for a test drive. You
should feel more response from the throttle. Car should now start off in first
instead of 2nd. Acceleration should be snappier.

Do this occasionally like every 3 months - some people that know of this do it
at every fill up but that's taking it a bit too far.

I must add that you will also notice a slight increase in fuel consumption or
decrease in mpg as you will be using the lower gears more and playing with the
throttle more - have fun.

Where about's are you in the UK? (not your address but general location)

There are other tricks for the E65 range like how to reset the service lights
and reboot the onboard computers.

What sat-nave DVD are you using?

Thanks for the post.

Have read that trick in some of the other forums but didn't realise the car
had to run for 2 mins after going through the process. First time i perfomed
it, did notice a big change in the response but lately, didn't seem to make
any difference so i'll perform it again and leave it running for 2 mins
tomorrow.

Noise is really starting to worry me! sounds as if its a bearing running
dry. Will buy some gearbox oil (83 220 142 516) this week and try topping it
up.

Downloaded an upgraded satnav disc but forgot to write on it what issue it
was. It definitely does not have postcode search which is a real pain.

BTW I'm in Belfast, N Ireland

PAUL - I DIDN'T say RUN the engine for 2 min - just let the car sit there with
the engine stopped and the key fob in the socket.

PAUL

The BMW/Navteq does NOT have speed cams or postcode search on it this is
something that need putting onto the DVD by downloading the contents to a DVD
and adding certain databases and the html coding so the sat-nave can access
them. We use the Tom-Tom DB slightly modified to work with the VDO system and
the UK postcode from ******

£20 for the upgrade software CD + DVD modified inc P&P.
