Well, the plastic end on my kickdown cable broke and dumped tranny
fluid all over the road. Biggest problem is I now have no reverse
gear. Anyone know enough about the ZF 4HP-22 to offer any ideas where
the problem is? I figure the clutches on the reverse gear died. When
you put it in reverse, there's a definite shift but no backward go...

I'd not have thought you could kill the clutch that quickly. When the
4HP-22 get the classic A clutch pack failure in forward gears it takes a
wee while.

It may not be shifting into reverse as well as you think. I'd have a
play with the linkage. It's not impossible you have a sticking solenoid,
especially if it's the EH sport/economy/1-2-3 box.

I have had the thought that the valve body might have crap in it. In
the morning, it tends to take a few minutes to warm up before it wants
to shift into second. Once it warms up a bit, usually by the end of
the street, it's fine. As for reverse, playing with the shifter does
no good. I get a definite reverse "feel" as it tries to grab, but not
enough grab to move the car. Forward gears are still solid so I
believe the "A" pack is definitely not the issue. My understanding is
when it goes, the car won't move at all. It's not the sport/economy
box. Just a straight up 4 speed auto as best I know. I have a spare
that I believe needs a torque converter (possibly a front pump) that I
am considering having rebuilt. Don't really want to spend the money as
it's probably in the neighborhood of $500 but it's cheaper than a car
payment. Any information is helpful and I'll try playing with the
linkage some more, maybe I'll get lucky. The idea of spending a day on
my back doing a trans isn't the way I want to kill a weekend...

Went out this morning and I have reverse again... Go figure. Still
going to look into getting the other tranny rebuilt.
