i remember an old story that there was an O2 sensor put out by another
car maker
that was the same as the BMW sensor but alot more cheaper .

dont know if it applies to all E36 but anyone know anything about
this ?  can my car use it ?

wondering if i can read the check engine fault code by using th gas
pedal. but i think
that was for older cars.

thanks

Just google for BMW CO2 sensor or Lamda sensor. I'm sure you'll
find more than one supplier for pattern ones that are cheaper
than OE ones, and are a direct replacement.
Mike.
