E46 Camshaft Position Sensors

I have a P0369 code which comes and goes, and I'm shopping for an
exhaust camshaft position sensor. I found that prices range from $38
to about $110. The cheapest sensor looks just like the original, but
the Bilstein Febi for about $68 looks a bit different. Since I already
had to replace this once before and used a dealer part that lasted on
25,000 miles, I'm leaning toward trying the Febi. Has anyone had any
experience with either the very cheap sensors or the Febi?

Thanks,

David

Look for the thread:  "Intake Cam Position Sensor Errors 2001 e39 530i
98,000 miles".
Notice the post by Brett Anderson from Koala MotorSports.  Brett is one of
the
most eminent BMW techs around; if he says they're junk, they are.

Thanks Floyd, I missed that thread when I was looking for information.
I guess I'll try another BMW sensor and hope that it isn't junk, too!

Good luck!  There have been and are instances where a new part
is broken out of the box.  If you decide to let someone else do it,
check on bimrs.org.

Floyd,
My daughter has an '00 323i E46, is the cam sensor an issue for this motor?
I've not heard of it, and she's put as many miles on her car as the OP has
put on his, and her total miles exceeds his by a wide margin. The OP asked
about the 330, and I'm not sure if this is a different motor than mine.

I'm not disputing the claim that the part is problematic, I'm only asking if
my daughter's car is affected, and if I should be on the lookout.

Thanks.

I haven't heard that the cam position sensors are particularly problematic
on BMW motors.  However, they do appear to break; part of the
problem with complex engines.

My '01 330xi has 130K miles on it and no sensor (knock, cam,
crankshaft, etc.) has failed.  YMMV.

I've never had any expereince with a failed cam sensor, and I've had at
least 10 of them on various cars and trucks in my family.

I can't suggest what else could be your trouble, but I have to wonder if
there is a different problem that manifests itself in the cam position
sensor. Maybe a bearing that lets the shaft wobble a little, or a defective
wire or connection.
