The BMW X5M and X6M are all about excess. Excess power (if that's possible), excess girth, and, as we already knew, excess cost. BimmerFile is reporting that the X5M will ding your budget to the tune of $85,400, while the X6M will set you back $88,900. And anyone that has ever priced out a Bimmer with options knows that those prodigious figures are only the baseline of what will no doubt be two even more expensive BMWs. But for nearly $90,000, you get what, for now, are the two most powerful BMW...

Ideal van for express deliveries!

Is it a van, is it a shed, no it's a BMW X5M...

Do you remember that Mercedes that flew of the track into a wood at Le Mans
a  few years back?

Now that was a carefully crafted aerodynamic race car tested in a wind
tunnel.

Now would you like to drive an X5M down the autobahn at 150mph (250kmph)
when it has "all the aero dynamics of a brick ****house"*?  Would you feel
confident?

* originally said in the 70's about the Range Rover in view of its appalling
mpg, poor top end and barn like styling, but then it was a vehicle actually
designed for [rich] farmers.

At a European audio show, I was discussing with a representative of a
large Austrian microphone manufacturer about a couple of their products
which seemed rather different than the rest of the line.  They both sounded
awful, with a very exaggerated and harsh top end, and they were both priced
at about the same cost as other products in their line which sounded much
better and had better fit and finish.

When I mentioned this to one of the engineers there, he hemmed and hawed
and thought for a minute, and he said, "These products are specially
designed and voiced for the American market."

I believe the X5 to be BMW's equivalent.

No, but then I am not trained to travel down any road at 150 mph...

I admit to having reached 120/125 mph in my common-or-garden Merc CLK soft
top, but only for a few seconds at a time, given the traffic conditions, but
even that was a near-death situation in that one small 'problem' (sudden
sideways gust, unexpected movement of another car etc) could have led to a
huge accident.

Range Rovers certainly have the aerodynamics of a barn and in those days the
high-speed handling of a hand-cart but, as you say, they were meant more for
lower-speed country work.

Bricks on wheels are still being built but are driven by drives who expect
sleekly-styled performance and fuel consumption...
