Donovan Colbert - 05 Nov 2003 20:02 GMT I've got a weird question I was hoping someone here could answer.
What is the theoretical top speed of a completely stock e30 325I with a Barvarian Autosports chip that removes the top-end governor? We're talking stock gearing, stock 14" rims, stock intake and exhaust. If you had a long, smooth, straight road, what is the top end of the e30 engine with the governor removed?

Well, let's see. Tires roughly 24 inches diameter, max rpm around 6500, final drive ratio about 2.5:1 ... ... 2600x24xpi=196035 in/min. /12 /60 = 272 mph. You did say "theoretical" did'nt you?
Donovan Colbert - 06 Nov 2003 06:35 GMT Oh... I forgot... I'm talking about the convertible, not the coupe or sedan!
:)
But, thank you, Bob. That information really illustrates my point, nicely...

Frank Kemper - 08 Nov 2003 14:49 GMT > Oh... I forgot... I'm talking about the convertible, not the coupe or > sedan! My E30 325i convertible automatic (german specs, no modifications, 15'' factory rims with 205/65 R tires, hardtop attached, redlines at approx. 220 kph (Speedometer shows about 230 then). Usually I do not reach that speed in normal traffic, but there is a part of the A9 Autobahn from Munich to Nuremberg, where the road s wide and straight, and goes to a slight slope down. There you can test such things. Without the slope my car reaches approx 205 kph (Speedometer reads 215). It is almost impossible to get the car to red line then.

Leon - 19 Dec 2003 15:12 GMT Interesting, what have you found is the best profile tyre size and shock absorbers for best handling? I've just replaced my shocks all 'round, and the handling suckz!! I have 195/65 R tyre size rear, and 195/55 R size front. (Pirelli)

The car came off the assembly line with the factory M technic suspesison package, which lowers the body by approx. 15 mm. I did not like that suspension, because I had problems with the ground clearance when entering my garage ramp (garage is in the basement). After approx. 100.000 miles on the clock (bought the car at 50.000 miles) my mechanic told me that the factory shocks were worn out. So I decided to have the ordinary factory springs and Sachs gas shock absorbers installed. This makes the suspension a little bit softer and gives me additional ground clearance. I like the softer suspension, because the convertible body is not very stiff.

joka - 14 Nov 2003 03:34 GMT Since we are talking about theory you cannont drive on "smooth" road, you need friction for picking up speed (of course anyone who lives in Minessotta could have told you that). In fact, there's an optimum friction coefficient on which "theoretically" you can drive forever without wearing your tires EVER.

John Burns - 04 Jan 2006 11:29 GMT > how do you removed the top speed governor on a bmw 325is if there si any? Don't think there is one. There might be a rev limiter though, if there is you'll need a new chip.

Chris D'Agnolo - 07 Jan 2006 21:44 GMT Just for grins, does anybody know what it's set at? Also, a rev limiter is a different animal from a top speed governor.

You would need to re-chip the ECU Psycho - 08 Jan 2006 04:15 GMT If I recall correctly, the rev limiter will kick in a few hundred RPMs over the redline on the tach. The top speed governor limits the car to roughly 150 MPH. But of these limits are modified on most aftermarket chips...
Rev limit on my son's 87 325is comes up quick when I'm burning through 1st gear... Damn gear is mighty short....

[quoted text clipped - 5 lines] >> >>It's in the firmware. You would need to re-chip the ECU I do not know what those limits are, but they are seperate and distinct. One limit for redline and one for max speed.

My '92 BMW 325iA Convertible German Spec. car definitely does not have any sort of speed limiter. Accordng to the speedometer reading, it reaches 212 kph on a straight road, which is approximately 202 kph in reality. When going slightly downhill, I have reached more than 220 kph. If the 212 kph would have been limited by a limiter, the car would not have gone faster downhill, I suppose.
