Well....... we were cited for no front plate while parked at the curb in
Westwood, CA, USA.  At first we thought it was a parking meter vuiolation,
but.....N-O-O-O-O)!!!!  Pretty petty stuff, but  have to figure out how to
satisfy the citation without permanently disfiguring the front bumper.... if
possible.

Any info about 'removable' brackets that will satisfy the authorities (ie-
no holes in the bumper)???  Or any other solution/advice???

Thanks.

which car do you have??

You can find some plastic wire tie's and run them around the bumper
and through the grill.  This is just premliminary.  I don't know which
bumper you have.

My friend fabricated someting on his 97 M3, but I'd have to get more
details.  It worked just fine when he went up to the CHP inspection
place up near Altadena/Pasadena.

I'll post back here.. ok?

Sorry. Wasn't thinking.

Car is a 2001 330i Convertible with Sport Package.

Got cited twice.  Once while parked on Sawtelle, near Olympic Blvd.
The other time I actually got stopped by a cop for the sole reason of
not having the front license plate.  Not worth the trouble, so I put
the plate on permanently.

What a funny local problem.  Get a non-US bumper.
In the rest of the world a front licence plate is normal..

(I did notice that in some parts of the US cars sported rear plates only.)

Purely a "styling" issue; front license plates are required in virtually all
US states, too.  If the OP doesn't have a front LP holder and such,
he's bought some other trim pieces from a custom parts supplier.

Of course, the US has un-cool 6"x12" plates, rather than 4"x18"
(or so) EU type plates.

It IS a style issue, most definitely.  I'm not sure what else makes many Us
car enthusiasts so adamantly oppose front plates when they "spoil" the look
of their car's front end.  I've owned a late-model Corvette, too.  That car
actually has a space built in for the front plate (you remove a trim cover),
but the plate REALLY degrades the aerodynamic look of the nose of the car.

Fow what it's worth, I've NEVER seen a late model Corvette with that cover
removed and a front plate installed.

Well........ consider yourself lucky.  I see one very so often and  the look
is not pretty, especially when the plate is some strange color that clashes
with the body color.  If you spend any time on CorvetteForum, you see posts
where people velcro the cover over the plate and tell the police they've
just come from a car show and forgot to remove it.  I've seen posts there
from someone who will paint the GM plate frame to match the body for you....
it helps a little.

There is a lexan replacement for the cover that takes care of the
aerodynamic issue. They even come with a colored tint to match quite a
few of the factory colors. Not sure were he got it but my neighbor has
one on his and it's either a 2002 or a 2003. You have to be straight
on to read the plate, the rest of the time it's pretty well hidden.

Being used to UK plates I find it odd to look at cars from areas with
dinky little plates and think it just looks downright wrong to have no
front plate!

Looks wrong??  I think its downright beauty to not have a front plate
on a BMW.  Thank goodness I live in a state that does not mandate a
front license plate!  Tennessee, USA.

I have lived in states that do require a front plate.  In those states
I put one on because the law says I must.  But, I don't have to
pretend to like it.  It's a control thing and not a form of beauty.

It also depends on the plate shape, as fbloogyudsr pointed out further up.

Ours (old UK and current EU) are long and thin, i.e. very rectangular.

I have been driving my BMW for two years with no front LP, and have never
been cited or even warned for it.  The fine is less than $20 and not worth
the officer's pen ink...I just get the speeding ticket ;-)

That's strange you would get a ticket for not having a front license plate on
your car because we see millions of vehicles with no front license plate and
the cops do nothing about it. One guy calls them in all the time and the cops
say it will take them three days to come out and look at the vehicle even
when it is parked right in front of the police station. We have seen the same
vehicles without a front plate for ten or fifteen years and they never get a
ticket. Someone said they are only after certain people and it could be
something called mobbing or gangstalking that you could be a victim of. Check
it out. There is a lot of info about this on the Internet. We know of only
one person who got a ticket for having a clear license plate cover on their
front license plate and yet we see hundreds of those every day, too. Seems
strange.
