My car has started to overheat, the top hose of the rad is hot and the
bottom one is cold, this bottom hose goes up to some kind of casting
the hose after the casting is hot, am i right in assuming the thermostat
is broke?

The car is a H Reg BMW 520i SE.

Thanks

H is probably the 24 valve. The water pump on these has a plastic
impeller that can detach from the drive shaft. I'd try a new pump,
replacements will be all metal. Try Euro Car Parts, about 25 quid. May
as well do the thermostat at the same time.
