2004 330ci Convertible - trunk latch problem

I have a 2004 330ci convertible.  I am having one minor problem that the
dealer so far hasn't fixed.  the electronic trunk unlatch mechanism doesn't
work.  I am referring to the button under the dash (driver's side) and the
button under the trunk lip.  I can only get into the trunk using the key, or
the button on the key fob.  when I first got the car, it was an intermittent
problem.  now it just doesn't work at all.  originally, the service guy
found a 'fault' in the computer chip for the alarm system (which I don't
have one), and he reset that.  the trunk worked briefly, and has now stopped
again.

anyone else with a similar problem, and a fix??

thanks,
alan

Are you sure you haven't accidentally disabled the interior release and the
button under the trunk lip by inserting the master key in the trunk keylock
and twisting it to the right (so the trunk keylock slot is horizontal)? If
you have done this intentionally or not, it is a feature not a bug (part of
the anti-theft system whereby you can give the valet key to a parking lot
attendant and they won't be able to get into the trunk). You can re-enable
the releases by inserting the master key and turning 1/4 turn to left, so
the trunk keyslot is vertical.

Rick,

thanks for the input.  on the convertible model, it is the glove box lock
that is the 'valet lock', and that is the first thing I checked when I
started having the problem.  I did however, try the key in the trunk key
release, and it only has one position -- horizontal!!

I have a 2004 325 convertible with a very similar problem, but the trunk
release hasn't yet completely stopped working.  It does, however stick in
the open position when you press the truck release inside the car or on the
trunk lid.  I have to "press-n-wiggle" the truck lid release to get it in
the unlatched position so the trunk will latch closed again.

So far the dealer has been unable to identify why it is sticking.

Hmmm. Interesting, I wouldn't have thought there would be a difference
between sedan and convertible vis-a-vis the locking systems... my 330i also
has the glove box valet lock. Actually, you'd think that the convertible
would want control over trunk locking even more, because the cabin is so
accessible! It just doesn't seem right that your trunk keylock doesn't have
the vert/horiz. switch. You might ask your dealer about this, I think this
is supposed to be a standard feature across the series. And if yours is for
some reason stuck or malfunctioning, it sure might explain the problem
you're having with the interior release and the trunk lid button.

If you listen closely, you can hear 3 distinct sounds when opening the trunk
via the trunk lid latch:

1) solenoid actuation
2) trunk latch releasing
3) trunk latch returning to the lock position

When it malfunctions, you will hear only sounds 1 and 2.  If you press the
trunk lid latch again you will hear the latch go to the closed position,
allowing it to lock when the trunk is shut.

What's curious is that this only happens occasionally -- I sat there with
the service manager and we got it to malfunction about 3 out of 10 tries, so
it does work normally most of the time.

There is obviously some sort of electro-mechanical failure.  Let's hope a
fix will be discovered soon.

I also have a 2004 330Ci convertible and there is only one position on
the trunk lock - "horizontal".

Here's what page 35 of the Manual says:

The lock
Only the master keys fit in the lock for
the luggage compartment lid, refer to
page 30.

To secure separately
Lock the glove compartment using the
master key.
This locks the luggage compartment lid
and disconnects it from the central
locking system. This feature can be
used to prevent unauthorized access to
the luggage compartment when you
surrender the spare key only, refer to
page 30. This can be advantageous for
valet parking, for example.

To open from the outside
Press the button in the handle recess:
the luggage compartment lid opens
slightly.
The luggage compartment is lit when
the luggage compartment lid is opened.

Manual operation
In the event of electrical malfunction
Turn the master key all the way to the
left – the luggage compartment lid will
open slightly.
The luggage compartment is locked
again as soon as you close the lid.

To open from the inside*
If the luggage compartment lid has not
been locked separately, you can open it
with this button in the footwell on the
driver's side when the vehicle is stationary.

Since the glove box lock controls this type of behavior by design when
locked, could the switch in the glove box be sticking or broken?

Anyone know how the glove box switch works?  Is it just an open/close
mechanical switch or a control module that puts a signal on a bus?
