Am I *sure* it was an E30? <pause for laughter to subside>
Yes, I'm sure.
It was a 1987 325i convertible with small bumpers instead of the original
diving boards and HID's inside his ellipsoids. Converted from automatic to
5-speed manual. He had the M-tech 3 spoke wheel, heated black leather
Recaro sport seats, and there was a loop attached to the outside shoulder
area of each seat through which the seatbelt could be routed.. Again, I
don't know for certain that the loop was stock, but it was there. Maybe it
was only on Canadian models.

I suppose it was not stock. My M technic sports package seats do not say
that they are made by Recaro (although I assume they are made by Recaro).
And they definitely do not have such a latch, although this may not be a
bad idea, because the belts tend to shiver on my shoulder at higher
speeds.

Not a latch, just a loop with a small gap. Moderately common on 2-door cars
from various makers. It allows you to slip the belt in so that it routes
more comfortably, but pull it out so that passengers can get in and out.
Anyway we've beaten that one to death... I'm sure life will be just fine on
the swap, loop or no loop. :-)
