Anyone pulled an E30 (6 cyl) rack out for replacement? I'm changing the one
in my slightly modified car, and swapping it for one from an E21. I think
if I change the hoses over it should all fit, however the old one isn't very
keen on coming out. After unbolting everything it can't be lowered, so I
have unbolted the sump only to find that also doesn't want to come out (also
has no gasket). It's been welded around the front and may be bigger than
standard - it looks like the oil pick-up won't let it move forward. I'm
thinking of unbolting the engine mounts and raising the engine a bit in
order to drop the steering rack out. Anyone got any other ideas?
TIA, Steve

Hi Steve,
as you said,
release the engine mounts, jack up the engine, this will give the clearance
you need

In case anyone's interested, E21 steering racks aren't interchangeable with
E30's. I had to raise the engine to get the old one out - Haynes was wrong
again.
