I was  getting a quote from a So. Calif dealer.  In the quote was a $330
cost for what he called MACO.  He said it stoodfor Manufacturer Advertising
Costs.  Is this on the level or just a way for So. Calif dealers make more
profit?

thanks in advance...

You are being ripped off!  This is normally a $99 paint job. :^)

Such a thing does exist.  It is the charge to dealers by BMW North America
(Or some other greater BMW entity), for their national advertising
campaigns. A pro-rata amount is attributed to each vehicle sold by a given
dealer.
I just checked the sales contract on my 2003 E-39 purchased in November,
last year.  There is no such charge to me on that document by BMW of San
Diego.

It can understandably be passed on to you as a bargaining chip when
negotiating the price of the car.  One way or another, the dealership gets
to write it off as a deduction.

Bottom line; I'd be pissed if they charged ME for one of their advertising
expenses.

Often, new car dealers will try to charge you for advertising costs.  It is
baloney.  Advertising is a cost of them doing business.  It should be
covered by what you pay for the car.  You should *not* have to pay this, but
they will probably reduce the discount from msrp to cover it anyway.
