Both are certified (translation: 3 years of maint costs built into the
selling price). Doubt I'd keep either one for more than 3 years so repair
cost not a factor. If I lease depreciation isn't either, though I'd assume
they would build that into the money factor. Is the base 4.5 that much more
spirited than a sport 4.4 w/steptronic and bigger gears? Anyone know where I
can find 1/4 mile times on these 2?

Joe,
I would suggest that you test drive both and compare.
However, if you are after "sportier" car, 745i standard
is quicker and handles better with 740i sport. IIRC
285hp vs. 333hp, not a marginal difference.

Why would you worry about 1/4 mile times on a 7 series?
Unbelievable...

The same reason that someone would buy a new Honda Civic then spend the same
amount again to justify putting a garbage can exhaust on it.
Take the 7 to Dinan and ask him for the "omakase" special.

Nope, you caught me Alex P, I don't know nothin' aboput anythin'. Ah is a
dope...
So are you saying you are dissatisfied with you E38? You lust for the odd
shape and bling-bling e-tronics of the modern interpretation of a BMW, do
you?
Well, good for you Alex ole' boy. But you are must be a retard who can't
appreciate the difference between a quality car with purpose, and one
searching for it's purpose. There is no need to spend oodles of money for
some POS electronics gizmo to turn on the heat unless you are looking to
impres you society friends at the next cotillion.
Gimme a break.

And while we're at it, what kind of nancy-pants needs the *car* to
advance the spark for him, to say nothing of having some failure-prone
electric gizmo in the place where the good Lord intended a starting
crank to be?
BMW and electric gimmickry have been synonymous since the days of the
Service Indicator.
Having spent a reasonable amount of time in both E38 and E65, I cannot
help but conclude that the new car is an improvement on all fronts. It's
faster, bigger inside, rides better, gets better mileage, offers more
features, and doesn't cost any more. It's not a looker per se but it
avoids the creepying anonymity of the previous two Sevens.

Fred,
Indeed, you have no clue.
2000 E38, 125.000km on the clock.
Replaced:
Complete sun roof cassette (around 1000usd),
front shocks with EDC (2000usd)
tyre pressure sensors on 4 wheels + reception box with aerial (1000usd)
rear roller blind,
lower control arms, bushes and wishbone something (1000usd)
TV control unit, with audio amp (2000usd)
gearbox had to be updated with new ZF software and refilled (2 l of oil
short)
passenger front seat needed attention as it developed rattling,
radiator developed hairline crack, replaced (1000usd),
oil leaks on both V banks, replaced gaskets.
Other than that is has been a happy motoring, and I love the car.
Month ago I purchased E60 530dA, with Idrive, active steering,
adaptive headlights, bluetooth.....
It takes a day to feel at home with I-drive.
Service setting where you can check how many k's you have
on your brakes, oil, cat. etc is fantastic. Having all that (and more)
on E65 is an advantage. If it breaks....well...E38 also breaks
(in case you have short attention span see above).
And, we were talking performance in the first place - 745i is
quicker and has better handling. So, what's your problem ?

Thanks for the feedback. I will be test driving both next week and try to
determine the value of these offerings compared to what other mfgrs have on
the market. Reason I asked about 1/4 mile times is we live in the age of
"ratings" where new models continually need to out do old ones. Increased HP
ratings do not always translate into acceleration imho.

That is all perfectly rational. Just forgive me my
impression that you will never end up owning any of the cars
you discussed here.
