Checking motor mounts on E36

    I have a 98 328i which I just purchased.
It has a vibration @ idle which doesn't seem to be in sync w/ RPM so
I'm wondering about motor mounts.
I'd like to check them and have a couple questions on how to check.
First - are they  std type rubber mounts?  That is, no dampers, etc.
What is good way to check? On other cars I've simply jacked up car and
then w/ hand jack raised engine carefully to see if motor mount was OK
(you have to be careful you don't break the mtr mount, of course..)
Finally,  are there safe lifing points other than the rubber pads?
I'd like ot set car on jackstands using these pads but don't want to
have to jack the car w/ BMW jack using the special hole for the jack.
It'd be nice if you can put a floor jack nearby and jack the car high
enough to set on stands on the rubber jack pads.
Thanks for any help
Ed

Hi Ed
floor jack, on the pads,
the stands,  on the chassis sections should be the safest way,
a block of wood and floor jack under the front damper pulley,
should reveal any weak mounts,
the correct way would be to use the lifting brackets on the top of the
engine, and a hydraulic engine lift,
good luck
