Bluetooth option question for those who have it...........

I had the bluetooth option installed in my 530. I find that the only
reliable BT connection I get is when the phone is in the trunk. It
seems that the antena installed in the car does not work. I am going
back to the service dept to check it, and I was told that they find
that the trunk is the best place for the phone.

I use BT for other devices (PDA, Laptop, Headset, Phone) and it seems
to work very well and the range is about 30 as it should be. The
system in the car seems only to work in a 3ft radius of the device
installed in the trunk.

Anyone else have the kit and experiencing anything different?

Thanks

John

I don't have an answer, but I am curious; If the phone is in the trunk,
a good, solid Faraday cage, does the phone see the network at all?  I am
assuming you put it in the trunk to be able to operate it through the
car bluetooth interface, but do you get any phone coverage at all with
the phone in the trunk?

It would be nice to have a definitive answer from a bluetooth kit
owner.  I am not yet, but this is my understanding of how it works.
1.  Antenna for communication between the phone and bluetooth kit/unit
is in the trunk.
2.  Antenna for communicating between the bluetooth unit and your
wireless provider's tower (ATTWS, Verizon, Cingular, TMobil, etc. in
the USA) is external to the phone and is in the bumper for
convertibles and the external shark fin on sedans and coupes.

So there are two antennas:
Cell Phone <antenna>Bluetooth Unit<antenna> Wireless provider

If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.  And if you have installed
the bluetooth kit in a convertible please speak up.

The antenna for the bluetooth should be in the armrest (center
console) next to the drivers seat. the antenna to your wireless
provides is in the phone, they dont add anything to enhance this, you
would need a wired connection to the phone for that. The reason I seem
to get a good bluetooth connection in the trunk is that is where the
ULF is mounted.

I have 3 Bluetooth phones (T68i, T68, T39m) and have the same problem
with all of them.

My phone does get a fair to good connection to the cellular (at&t and
TMobile) provider even when it is in the trunk.\\John

I don't have any experience with the BMW bluetooth, but I have extensive
experience with another bluetooth installation in the trunk of a
Saab 9-3.  With the electronic box and the antenna in the trunk, the
bluetooth headset (or whatever device you wanted to use) could be paired
from anywhere in the car.  In fact, the range was so good that you could
be outside of the car within 15 feet (5 meters) and still have good
reception.

Excuse me if I appear a little (lot?) confused but I'm trying to
understand Bluetooth in a BMW before buying and installing the kit.
You said: "In fact, the range was so good that you could be outside of
the car within 15 feet (5 meters) and still have good reception."
What's the advantage of being outside the car while still connected to
the car's Bluetooth? Or was this just a statement to support putting
the phone anywhere in the car and still get a good connection?

Appears I was totally wrong.  Bluetooth communications with the BMW
Bluetooth kit works like this:

   (Wireless provider)
            |
    (Phone Antenna)
   (Phone Bluetooth)
            |
 (Car Bluetooth Antenna)
            |
(BMW ULF Bluetooth Module)
            |
 (Car electronic system)

Communication between the Wireless Provider and the phone is via the
phone antenna.  Communication between the phone and the car is via the
Bluetooth antenna that is connected to the ULF Module which in turn is
connected to the car electronics.

Your description above is correct.  My comment about reception outside
the car was only show that it could be used anywhere inside the car also.

Wow, if the pairing antenna for the 5-series is in the trunk, that's a
bonehead installation.  For the 3-series, the pairing antenna is
installed under the center console.

It may be an apples to oranges comparison, but I'll post my experience
with the Bluetooth kit in an X5. (Which I installed myself.)

The X5's Bluetooth antenna (that is, the antenna responsible for the
Bluetooth communication between the phone and the Bluetooth unit [ULF])
is in the back cargo area, above the CD changer and Navigation DVD. The
center console only holds the pairing button, and an optional "snap-in"
adapter. The snap-in adapter is used to hold various phone models.

If a "snap-in" adapter is utilized the phone will charge in the adapter.
It is also supposed to utilize an external antenna for the phone
communication to the cell towers. Feedback that I've read on the adapter
is that the RF is actually poorer than if the phone is not in the
adapter. There are some theories on this, but I've not seen anything
emperical.

That one must keep his phone in the trunk is silly. That's a poor
design, in my opinion. The whole point of Bluetooth is convenience.
Losing the inconvenience of a tethered connection to have it replaced
with consciously placing a handset in the trunk before taking off on a
drive is really out there.

I agree. This is why I started this thread.  I wanted to see what
other people were seeing with the bluetooth kit. To date i am not
pleased at all and I am seriously considering asking for my money
back. This device is not working anything like it should be.

E60 530d with factory bluetooth, apart from
short list of compatible phones (I had to buy
used Nokia 6310i, hope that new Communicator 9500
will be okay) everything works great. Voice dial and all.
Aerial is situated in the boot (trunk) as well, no problems with range.

I have a BMW 525 04 (got it in NOV.) Do I have bluetooth? and if not, what I
need to buy to activate it?

The easiest way to check is to press TALK button on your steering,
and say HELP. If you get voice guidance you have it, if not better
speak to dealership, I don't know if all cars are pre-wired for BT.

My friend has an M3 with the factory fitted bluetooth option fitted.  He can
leave the phone in his pocket and it works fine.  He has an Ericsson T610.
I tried my Nokia 8910, that also worked fine.

Just brought my car in to have the bluetooth checked. Apparently the
Antennea (they called it an amplifier) was bad. After it was replaced
i can leave the phone anywhere and it works fine.
