My dealer installed the BMW Bluetooth kit the other day in my '03 330i - the
tech who did the job apparently has done it successfully on other cars - but
I can't get the initial Pairing procedure to fire up. I have one of the
approved phones, Sony-Ericsson T616, which has Bluetooth enabled and
"visible", and the phone is already synchronizing well via Bluetooth with my
PC. The BMW Voice Input System (which is a part of the BT installation) is
working, i.e., I can say "Dial Phone" and the system responds "No Phone", so
at least it is recognizing voice commands even if it can't do anything with
them yet.
I have an appointment with the dealership on Monday to sort out the problem,
and I will be there this time (couldn't attend before) with the phone and
some install tips from Mark Harris gleaned from this forum. But does anybody
here have any ideas on why the Pairing procedure won't kick in?
Here's what I tried, in detail:
Phone on and in the car with Bluetooth enabled and visibility on. Press and
hold Pairing button on center console for at least 1 second, then insert key
and start up the car, still holding down the Pairing button for at least 3
seconds after the car has started (this feat alone kind of like playing
Twister). At this point the message "BT Pairing" is supposed to appear in
the Business Radio display; it doesn't. Either the radio/CD plays, if it's
on, or if it's not on, the time displays. Tried it both ways, with radio on
and off, and no Bluetooth thing happens. Also tried activating the phone's
BT "search for devices" feature right after the car starts (while still
holding down the Pairing button!), but no joy.

I had this problem too. It took persistence to get it to work. Oddly, I
had to wait five minutes (with the vehicle off) in between tries. It
eventually worked.
If you do get it to work, make sure you immediately turn off the vehicle
and turn it on again when it says "pairing successful." I didn't do
this, and was constantly wondering why it wouldn't "hold" the pair. I
should have read the instructions more clearly.

Thanks, Joel. I'll try leaving the car off for a while and see if it works.
