For the last 2 years my check engine light has been on. I have had several
items fixed such as o2sensors, air pump etc. It goes away but always
returns. The car runs perfectly. I just want the light to go away. Any way
to just disconnect it? The car is a 96 328is

Pull the cluster and pull the bulb.  About an hour the first time.

Take a sticker and write OK and initial it and stick it over the
light... works on all models :-)

Well, you could just unplug it, or take the lamp out.

That Check Engine light is trying to tell you something, and the computer on
the car is pretty good at giving up the secrets of its insides. All it takes
is the proper diagnostic tool. Have you been to a BMW mechanic that has a
diagnostic tool? If not, then you need one.

The Check Light not coming on, or staying on all of the time, is a reason to
fail Smog in states where they test that sort of thing.

Which they do not do in many states, including mine (NH).  I'd be more
concerned with those secrets the ECU is trying to tell...

Actually you can borrow one for free (!) from Schucks/Kragens.

That's a great idea. But, you can not get them from Autozone/Kragen (yes, I
know they are not the same) outlets in California. Apparently the Mechanic's
Trade Association here has made a strong argument that people fixing their
own cars is taking food out of the mouths of the children of mechanics. Of
course, they ignore the fact that when any of us pay a mechanic for
something we could do ourselves takes food out of our kids' mouths. Given
the options, prefer a mechanic's kid being skinny than my own kid.
