Hello All,
I have a 1996 318i Touring with all the amenities (automatic climate
control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, exterior temp gauge, trip
computer, etc), and I have grown quite fond of it.
We are rearranging our car collection now and I have just bought a 1995
318i Cabrio. It is great and I am very pleased with the purchase. I
drove it home from Germany (I live in Norway) and really got to know it
on the trip.
There are a few things the Cabrio doesn't have that I'd like to retrofit,
as I have become spoiled by my Touring. I am selling the Touring so the
Cabrio will be my every day car.
Things like a center armrest, and a Business RDS CD are pretty straight
forward, but what about the digital clock/thermometer combo? The cabrio
has just the simple analog clock. I don't need the full trip computer,
but external temp is very important to me because of the icing
conditions around here, and also how else will I know which wax to use
when cross country skiing? ;-)
So does anyone know where the sensor is for the exterior temp gauge? How
much of a pain would it be to retrofit? Is the wiring perhaps already
there? I'm only interested in original equipment because I like the
integrated look of the BMW accesories such as radio/cd etc.
The other retrofit would be an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. It looks
like from my Touring it would work just by running a power wire to it
from the cabin light area. Is this the case?
Also a ski-bag. The Cabrio doesn't have one, but the center cushion
pulls out and there is a plain plastic blanking plate that looks like it
could be removed. Is this a simple swap from a junked car that has a ski-
bag?
Thanks!
Joseph

As I understand it, every E36 has an ice warning beep at 3C so I
wouldn't be surprised if the sensor was already there (in the brake
ducting on the left side) I'd simply try swapping over the display
units & see what happens.
I've found that the (older) blaupunkt stereos fir in very nicely.
