I just noticed a few oil spots under my car this weekend and my wife said
it smelled like I was burning oil when following me this morning. Any
ideas on what may cause this? Sound expensive?

Can you supply any other details? It would be helpful to know the
mileage, amount of maintenance performed, etc. Without these, this is
largely conjecture. You likely have a small amount of oil leaking
onto something very hot - exhaust manifold or pipes. It could be a
simple as your valve cover gasket, which is a cheap fix.

Hve a good look at the back of your engine, preferabley
just when the car came back from above 4000 rpm driving.
Now what do you see there? Look specifically at where the
block and head meet.

One common leak point is where the power steering pipes meet the
reservoir. Easily seen when you look for it. ;-)

Thanks for the resonse everyone. It's a 97 328 with 78,000 miles. Dealer
maintained with all service records. The car has been worry free except
the brake light circuit error. (It started this winter and it's been too
damn cold for me to want to fix it) :)
I took a peek last night and it does appear to be coming from where the
power steering pipes meet up with the reservoir. I'm hoping to get home a
little earlier tonight to get a better look.

That is a very common problem. Take off the crimp type hose clamps and
replace with appropriately sized screw clamps available practically
anywhere. Inspect the ends of the PS hoses while you are at it (as best you
can without removing from the resevoir). But they are probably fine...

When this recently happened to my 528, I asked the dealer to sort it while
it was in for a service. They charged 70 gbp for removing cleaning and
re-fitting. But the leak was still there. And on inspection (by me), the
crimps hadn't been touched, let alone replaced. Nor had they cleaned
anything. On complaining, they said they'd need the car back to assess
what new parts would be needed, and order them in. I removed the crimp and
replaced it with a worm drive clip. I complained to BMW UK about this and
other matters concerning the service, but they made no comment about this
part.
So if you're in the UK, avoid Cooper.

Cooper Wimbledon. Seems to be a pattern here. ;-)

I fixed the same problem by adding a second hose clamp below the factory
one, since the inside peice extends far enough into the hose for the second
clamp to bite safely.

Well I've been too busy to take another look so I dropped it off at the
dealer today and figured I'd just eat the couple hundred they were going
to charge me to fix it. They just called and say it's either the oil pan
gasket or main rear seal. They couldn't tell without pulling the tranny.
Damn!
