Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

Sorry Scott,
That's wrong. The Z3 coupe with a 2.8L engine in '99 and 2000, and then a
3.0L engine in '01 & '02.
M roadsters and Coupes came with the 3.2L M engines, but there were Z3
(non-M) coupes sold for a while. How many, I do not know, but they show up
on eBay often enough...

A quick Googling doesn't show much so I will have to rely on
unreliable memory. ISTR that the Z3 3.0 coupe sold a total of 618
units or something similar in 2002. Over the course of the model in
the US, the M Coupe usually outsold the small-motor Coupe 7 or 8 to
1... and it didn't exactly set the world on fire itself.
I've seen a fair number of them on the road. Nothing says "hard-core
propellerhead" to me like a non-M Z Coupe. That's a car driven by
somebody who knew *exactly* what he was looking for and went out and
bought it. I would think that the Z3 3.0 Coupe in particular would
make a great trackday car. Not too much power for the chassis and a
solid roof over your head for the tech Stalinists.

Thanks for the answer, what do you mean by ISTR ? I seem to recall ?
Assuming the sales were almost constant, they should have built roughly less
of 1500 cars of the 3.0l model.
Here, they are quite rare, even on the French Riviera. For three past years
I've seen five or six no more. The roadsters are quite common instead.

Yes... not a bad guess for someone for whom English is presumably
not a first language :)

I would agree with you...and now that I think about it I have seen
more 2.8 coupes than 3.0 coupes.
The Z Coupes are all wonderful, characterful cars... something about
them says "BMW!" to me where the roadster does not... Not the prettiest
coupe out there but who said Bimmers had to be pretty?

It was only after sending it that I found this out (I did try cancelling
the message :-) ) but I've a feeling that it was only M versions that
made it to the UK that sparked my thinking.

I can see where you could get that idea. There certainly were more M-coupes
made than Z-coupes. At least the classified ads seem to indicate so...
