How bad is the damage?

Hi everybody,

Only a few hours ago I was involved in an accident. In short: I wanted to
turn left on an intersection on a small village road, and another car wanted
to pass me at more than double my speed rather than stop behind me. There's
more to the situation than that, but that's just about the gist of it.

Besides scrathes on my left wheel arches (back and front), side skirt, door
and front bumper, I did not see any damage. It was only when I tried to move
my car off the road that I noticed that I could not drive it anymore -
apparently he had hit my front left wheel full in the side.

When my wheels are in a normal position, the steering wheel is at an almost
90 degrees angle with the normal position.

Could someone please give me a short list of:
- what's wrong with the car (ie which components have been hit and need
replacement)?
- what this is going to cost me?

The car has been towed to my dealer, and I'll be sure to ask him the same
questions. Only, it's the Easter weekend and I'd rather not wait three days
before I have an indication to when and how my beloved Beemer can be
restored.

Thanks in advance,

Princess Morgiah

Shouldn't the insurance company of the idiot who hit you be paying instead
of you?  If he's uninsured and at fault, your insurance should have coverage
for uninsured motorists and you could also sue for the damages/repairs.

Whether or not he is at fault still remains a question for the court to
decide. I spoke to several cops who all told me different interpretations of
this particular accident which could lead either way. Basically it comes
down to the following:
- thou shalt not pass a vehicle on the left that indicates that he/she wants
to take a left turn - which puts me in the right
- thou shalt not turn left if a vehicle is already overtaking you - which he
was not but claims to be, which would put me at fault
At least I got a witness who can back up my story.

He is insured by the way, so that's a relief.

Anyway, my post was actually more a cry for help on the 'how bad is the
damage' part, not so much on how much it's going to cost me. Another thing I
would like to find out is how bad the car's shape will be after repairs.

I've had a Ford Escort before my beloved Beemer, and had an accident with
that as well (I was not at fault by the way) - although the car had been
repaired and came through all technical tests etc... it still did not feel
'safe' to drive anymore, knowing the damage that had been done. I'm not
talking about the psychological effect, but about little defects that I've
noticed about the car that it did not have before. For example: if I turned
the wheel entirely to the left (to park, for instance), I felt a tapping
while driving and heard a knocking sound from the left side of the car
although the steering etc... had been checked more than once. They never
came up with something other than "that's because of the accident".

Drive safe,

Assuming you weren't hit particularly hard, it's probably just the weakest
parts of the steering system, most likely the tie rod connector.  If you're
unlucky it might have damaged the top of the suspension towers, although you
don't say what year and model car you were in.
The wheel rim itself may also be damaged but if it were hit good you would
normally have a flat tyre too, depending on where and how it hit.  Sometimes
ball joints can be ripped out of sockets in a good impact, but if there's
not much panel damage then that's probably a good sign.  Good luck,
Steve

Thanks for the reply, Steve. It's a 2003 E46 320d, and I just received the
news that the steering system was indeed hit.

They'll have a thorough look later this week and then I'll find out what
exactly is wrong with the car and what needs replacing.

I have a great deal of faith in my dealer so I'll expect my car to be 100%
a-ok within a few days/weeks.

You must be one of the very few who do!

Good luck.  Just make it very clear you want it 100% then they *might*
look at it closer before they give it back to you.  I think BMW always
ship outs repair work so it's just your backstreet shop doign the
repairs most of the time.
