I have a 90 325is with a valeo alternator. All of my interior and
exterior lights are pulsating at all speeds. I have been told that
new brushes or voltage regulator may work. I can get to the voltage
regulator with the alternator in the car by taking off the back cap of
the alternator. I have no idea where the brushes are. Can someone
tell me if i will have to take the alternator out of the car to get to
the brushes, or if i can reach them simply by taking the back cover
off the alternator.
thanks in advance.

I'm not certain about your Valeo, but many have the brushes as part of the
regulator - remove one and you remove both. They will be 'behind' the
regulator, though, as they bear on slip rings which are parallel to the
alternator pulley, rather than at right angles as the commutator on most
motors is.

If you've already removed the regulator, then you've removed the brushes
also.
They're the two short copper pads that are on the regulator. They're
supposed to be a lot longer.
Buy a new regulator and you'll be on your way.
