Hello Folks

I have a 94 740i that for whatever reason smokes on startup.  I do not touch
the gas so it ins't extra gas but a puff of white smoke.  I think it could be
oil but it doesn't smoke any other time.  Could it be a bad gasket that drips
slowly?  Could this be the sign of an engine needing a rebuild?  Total miles is
164k, otherwise it runs fine and still gets good gas mileage.

Most likly it is the valve guide seals. As the engine cools down, it sucks
oil from the head into the cylinders causing smoke on startup. Eventually
they will need replacing but it is not a major problem at this point. I
don't know wheather you drive the car daily, but it is a good idea to start
the car daily or as often as possible to keep the seals oiled.
