Hi, my 1992 525I sport with 120,000 miles on the clock is using oil.  I
filled the engine to the top mark on the dipstick 6 months ago with fully
synthetic oil, yesterday the engine oil low warning come on. I checked the
dipstick and it was just below the bottom mark.  I  have now put in about 1L
of oil and am now half way between the marks.  I tow a caravan most
weekends.  The car has a full BMW dealer history.  Should I worry about
using this amount of oil over 6 months?

Thanks

How many miles have you driven in this length of time?

As for worrying about the oil consumption, you need to determine whether it
is leaking or burning the oil.  Leaking is usually the result of a bad
gasket somewhere.  While gaskets are not expensive, replacing one might not
be either easy or cheap.  If it is buring oil, an engine rebuild is likely
the only solution.  Engine rebuilds are definitely not cheap.

It could be merely expected usage for a car with that many miles.

I don't know about that, my M20 doesn't burn any oil at all at 320,000km but
has started to lose it through a gasket leak, so I'm adding 1L between
changes.  Prior to the leak starting about 10k ago, I never had to add at
all and my plugs and exhaust don't show any signs of oil in the combustion
chamber.
