BMW 635CSI Antenna Not going down

Just bought a BMW 635CSi and I noticed that after
wipping off the antenna, it does not want to go
all the way down. All sections telescope except
for the one closest to the trunk.

Could it be that I removed the lubricant? If so,
what do you recommend I use?

In Germany every petrol station sells special antenna lubricant tissues.
They look like the fresh towels you get on airpline flights. Just open
the bag on both sides, pull the bag over your antenna and rub up and down
on it. Move the antenna up and down a few times to bring the lubricant to
every part of the mast. In Germany these tissues are often branded by
Hirschmann, which is a well known manufacturer of antennas and has
probably made the one you own. I don't know the brands popular in the US,
but every product for cleaning antennas should be suitable. If you have
to order these tissues, get yourself quite a few of them, because you
should repeat the cleaning every two or three months, according to the
enviromental situation your car is running in.

I can see the need for such a product, but to be honest, I have never seen
such a thing, ever, in the US.
No wonder so many of the antennae don't work here...

If somebody has access to the Bosch antenna program, he should try part No.
8 697 010 681. This is a package of 5 pieces Aerial cleaning cloth. MSRP
per piece should be around one dollar.

One of my cars has the original glovebox contents and there's a little
thing from hirschmann that tells you about antenna care and one
of the little packets. I'd suspect any new car with a hirschman
antenna has this.

Dude, it's just silicone spray. Hirschman admits it. Spend $5
on a can of the stuff and you can make thousands of little
antennae handy wipes ang gig German tourists for big bucks.

The clucth in your antenna motor needs adjusting at the very
least. You might have broken the nylan gear in the shaft. Take
it off and have a look at it.

Do you have a source for that? The antenna lubricant I use smells different
than silicone spray, and I think it does not only have to lube the antenna
mast, but also has to maintain the elctrical contact between the single
mast sectors.

However: I agree with you that one dollar for one antenna care pad is
dramatically overpaid. So is 50 cents for using the vacuum cleaner once at
the petrol station - but what is the alternative solution? Bring your own
cleaner?

They don't need lubricant as the sections have adequate clearance. Just
clean it all thoroughly. A normal oil will simply cause dirt to stick to
it and jam the aerial all the quicker.

If the aerial is jammed partially up, you can work the sections up and
down by hand to clean them.
