Does anyone know if it's possible to retrofit an E39 with rain sensors?  I
know that the windscreen needs to be replaced (since they ask whether you
have a rain sensor when you order a new one) but is the wiring going to be
difficult or impossible to do?

Cheers.

Why bother?
It's the one feature that annoys me the most on my '03 E39.
You're much smarter than the chip that they use to control these things.

I totally agree ('99 E46).  Do you still lose the manually adjustable
intermittent wipe feature with the rain sensor?

And it, along with auto climate control, is now standard on the 5 series -
at least in the U.S.

No,  I have a '99 E46 328i (with climate control & rain sensor) & a '03 Z4
3.0 (with neither).  A visit to www.bmwusa.com reveals that my Z4 is one of
the few Bimmers one can order without so many "automatic" aids!

The active steering does sound interesting, though - especially if there was
some degree of driver control of the ratio spreads.

You manually activate every single wipe ?

Here in Christchurch we get intermittent rain and drizzle.  It can be sunny
then rainy then sunny then rainy....

I'd rather not have to manually turn the wipers on and off every few
minutes.
