Hi all - I have a 1998 540i V8. I've only had it 6 weeks but in that time
both cats have failed (still subject to legal dispute). A week before cat
failure, BMW Dundee found that the thermostat (MAP thermostat?) and the
radiator both needed replacing. Could the thermostat have been involved
with the cat failure? I read on a website (can't find it!!) that the
thermostat could cause cats to fail. The reason I ask is that I'm hoping to
eliminate anything that may cause them to fail again
cheers

Possible. If the engine was running too cold all of the time it would also
be running rich. Spewing a lot of unburnt fuel into the cats would be one
way to toast them.
