I have a 2000 323Ci but the accelerator pedal is very stiff. Does anyone
know what might be causing this. I heard it may be an electrical fault.
Anyone know anything about this.

Possibly the throttle cable.
My son had the same problem on his '99 323. A new cable cured it.

I'll try that.
Thanks

There is a known problem with sticky accelerator pedals on E46s.  They
replaced the "accelerator module" on my 2002 E46 under warranty.  There is
no accelerator "cable".

There is on a 1999 with the 2.5L M50 Vanos lump.

99 is a hyrbrid system.   The throttle cable does nothing until about 85%
throttle.  Prior to that, it's controlled by the DK motor.  BMW was hesitant
to let the system take the car to full throttle electronically, at first,
but discarded the cable quite quickly in the end.

Do you mean that on modern engines (3.0l M54 for instance) there's no cable
going from the pedal to the engine ?
Is there a potentiometer instead ?

That is correct.  The E39 M5 was the first with this setup IIRC.
All current I6 engines (2.0/2.5/3.0/3.2) and valvetronic engines
are that way - not sure about the older V8's and I4's.

1988 750iL was the first with this set up, as there are two throttles,
mounted some distance apart, it was the most logical way to control them.

None of the BMW V12's have had cable throttle, none since the early 80's
double M30 prototypes at least.    V8 got it in 99 model year.  I6 got the
partial system in 99 model year, fully electronic in 2000.  Not sure when
the I4 got it, but probably with the introduction of the N44.

Diesels?  Anyone?  According to ETK, they are also electronically
controlled.

FWIW, most of the car mags love the electric throttles - Car & Driver
says that BMWs have "brilliant throttle response".  ;->
