M3 1200 mile service

At 1200 miles new M3's require an engine oil change, transmission fluid
change, and gear box oil change.  I can understand the transmission and
differential.  However, do they use a special break-in oil for the engine or
is it just concern about particles in the oil that the filter will miss?

The 1200 mile service does NOT include engine oil.

For E46 M3

Originally, everyone got the engine oil changed paid by BMW, _except_ for
North America (Canada, USA).  Anyone in Canada or USA had to pay for engine
oil changes made earlier than the standard service interval determined by
the computer.

Now, somewhere along the way during the E46 M3 crank bearing issues and
subsequent warranty extentions, new E46 M3s in Canada and USA started to
include with the 1200 mile an engine oil change paid by BMW.  A lot of the
dealers are NOT aware of this but it has been documented in the new service
bulletins by several owners who recently had 1200 mile services.

I don't remember the exact date of this change, but it happened sometime
last year, spring I think.

I would check the E46 M3 forum on roadfly.com for more details.

You state there is are *new service bulletins*, I presume put out by
BMW, that authorizes oil changes at 1200 mile services? If so, please
post the service bulletins or at least the bulletin number(s) so it
can be verified and referenced by others.

I received a letter from BMW Canada in the mail stating the change in 1200
mile service for my M3.  But I gave all letters and service info to the
person I sold it to.  I had already paid for my 1200 mile service to
include the engine oil change, and sold the car, so it was too late for me
to benefit from it.

As I mentioned, if you ask on the E46 M3 forum on roadfly.com, you can get
copies of the more recent service bulletins to verify this change in the
1200 mile service.

I just checked all available bulletins at www.bmwtis.com and can't find any
reference to this.

I can understand why a dealer wouldn't be "aware" of it, given that the
service bulletins are their law, and if it's not in a bulletin, then it
doesn't exist.

I would be interested in facts, like a bulletin number.  Would love to go
get them from Roadfly but the board Nazi's won't let me on there, because I
know what I'm talking about, and that would screw up their system of
misinformation via paid advertisements.

I own an 03 M3. The 1200 mile service absolutely DOES include engine oil.

Just to back this up: Here's the text from my warranty and service info book

1200 Mile Service

"The engine incorporated in your BMW M3 is a race-bred engine design which
includes increased power output and maximum engine speeds compared to
conventional BMW 3 Series engines. The increased power output also affects
other major drivetrain components such as the transmission and the rear axle
differential. The 1200 Mile Service requires changing the oil in the engine
and both the transmission and the differential."

Is that enough proof?

Hey Brett, can you elaborate on this about Roadfly? I've always been
weary of their close ties to their advertising companies, even if it's good
ones like Tire Rack. I've mainly used their classifieds.

Good thing this is USENET, and alt.* to boot, where *nobody* can kick
you out!
