hi Guys..
I just bought a e32 1994 740iL .. runs great
I fill it up tank that  holds supposedly 102Litres
gauge shows Full
computer tells me Range = + 900k  or so
i go 480KLM and it shows  1/2 on the  fuel gauge,,, 400k leftr on the
computer
then 50k further im on 1/4 onthe gauge
THEN ,,, suddenly the  fuel gauge goes down FAST and the computer starts its
countdown,,  200k range,..199k .. 198k   195k around every few seconds.  I
drove to the servo  with  just 20k left to go but only put in  only 60litres
to fill it..

SO a quick calculation tells me ive been doing 12.1 Litres per 100k (
execellnt for a V8) and i imagine there were still around 40 litres in the
tank BUT the computer said  sort of ,, "Brace courself in a few min you will
run out of fuel!!!! // .. Liar..
this has happended every time now ..
in othe words ,,very accurate the first half of the tank and totaly out the
seconds half...
...and its very unnerving to be cruising along knowing the petrol station is
further away than  your range till empty
Im not game to drive it past what  the  Computer is telling me  ....  who
knows... it may shut down even though there is still fuel in the tank if it
thinks its run out.

any ideas ??

Perhaps the sender is bad.

I've found all my BMW fuel gauges to be unreliable after halfway.  I just
reset the trip-meter after each fill and go by that.

If you're up to messing about with your BMW, check out
http://bmwe32.student.utwente.nl/johan/fuel_sender/fuel_sender.html for
instructions on how to remove and clean the fuel sender. The author says:

The fuel gauge on my car was erratic in the last 40 liters. The
last 20 where the worst. The needle would fall from 20 liters to 0
and go back up to 20 in 2 to 3 seconds. I figured cleaning the
fuel sender could cure the problem.

I have the same problem on my E34 1991 525i and will do this when I get
some spare time.

Cheers, Jan

It won't.  The computer whose readout is lying to you has no dominion
over the engine or fuel flow.  You may safely ignore it now that
you're satisfied it is wrong.  The engine and fuel pump will take you
right out to the last few drops of fuel.
