E60 530d Oil consumption

I am a bit worried,
3000km and today for the second time
I had to add liter of oil (Castrol TXT).

In 2001 I had 530i, used just over a liter
before the first 25.000km service.

Is this high oil consumption normal ?
Would love to hear from 330d/530d owners.

TIA,
Alex

My 2001 E39 530D uses NO oil between services and even at service time it didn't need
topping up
Driving style is "hard", but I always warm it up thoroughly first and
never labour a cold engine and don't rev it above 2500 until warmed up
and rarely/never over rev it (4000+) - you just don't need to !

I still didn't rev it over 4000, never pressed kick down,
always let it idle for about 30 sec when starting from cold.

Are you on full synthetic oil ?

Yes - Mobil 1 0W-40 - I have used others and come back to this - engines seem
to like it and have no trouble with it.
I wouldn't let a cold engine idle - most authorities seem to suggest that to drive off
"lightly" produces least wear, which is what I do - very light throttle openings
until thoroughly warm  - which can be a few miles and is NOT as soon as the
water gauge reads "normal" but somewhat after !

Thanks Nick,

I had 530i from new in 2001 and used just over a liter of oil
before 1st service (25000km). Therefore, few seconds
of idling (no temperature gauge on E60, just M5 style indication on
rev counter) or my driving style during break in is out of question.
Will follow up with dealership tomorrow.

there is also a petrol and different type !!) got it confirmed approved by BMW head office
and its been running on that ever since - I buy it in France at half the price of in
England, although you can get it at about 60% retail if you buy a big package of it (80
ltrs I think) between a few friends.
Dealer quite happy to use my oil and supply the filter and labour to change it (a bit
surprisingly)

Officially 500ml over 1000km is still "normal"
according to BMW, however if problem persists,
dealership is prepared to top up oil, "seal" the cap
and check oil level again after 2000km. They are prepared
to make a note in the system of high oil consumption, inform
BMW and discuss further action with me.

One more thing though....my diesel consumption
dropped around 20% from new... is it possible
that new engine is still too "tight" ?

I do drive "off" lightly for the sake of both time and petrol economy but
the only reason your car owner's manual says this is better than letting the
engine idle is because it's more environmentally friendly. Other than that,
I'm afraid it's always better to have your engine tilting for one or two
minutes before driving off - and then again it's still cold, of course.
