I want to mount 235/45/17's on a 17x7.5 wheel.  Is there anywhere that I can
check to ensure that this configuration will fit?

Looks like you should be looking for 235/40-17" tires, not 45's.

The 45's would be a bit larger in diameter which would be bad for
acceleration and possible interference, good for highway driving and
mileage.

don't go 40's - tried it once ride is harsher and the roads beat up the
tires faster
i have been running 235/45 17's for years now on three different 3 series
and i think
they are the superior choice for ride and handling.

1010 tires have a great online size calculator

In that case, why not go with 16" wheels?  That's what I have on my E36 and
I find them to be a good compromise between handling and ride performance.
