Does anyone have any ideas what it may be referring to?
Car runs okay.
No other symptons...except could use a tuneup perhaps.
Just wondering if anyone else had this experience.
My 528i has had the "check engine" light on for 2 years and nobody knows why.
Just that the M3 is expensive to service and don't want to test fate....

The Check Engine Light means there is something wrong with the emission
system somewhere between the intake tract and the catalytic converter. The
gas cap can cause a Check Engine light as well. Normally it means the O2
Sensor is faulty. The computer throws a code that describes the exact fault.

The CE light came on in my '96 328is and the cause ended up being a crack in
the portion of the intake tract between the MAFS and throttle body. $36
later, it was fixed! I love it when it's easy!

Normally, but definitely not always. Get the code checked.

My 328i will light the CE on long trips. there is a leak on the rubber
gasket on the gas cap.
I treated the rubber, and haven't seen the light again.

I have a '98 M3. The light is emissions related. My M3 is little more
expensive to service than a regular E36 series (I checked), so you may want
to check the actual cost. A code will be available to determine the cause.
You can decide whether to fix it or not. But, I would find out what it is.
This should not cost much. Could be a loose gas gap to something much more
serious. Also, if the fault cures itself, the computer will detect this and
turn off the light automatically. My M3 once misfired after not starting
for a while. The misfire triggered the check engine light. It ran fine
after a few moments, and after several days and a few cold restarts, the
light turned off, as it is supposed to do.

Given that there's no difference between an M3 3.2 and a 328i, or an M3 3.0
and 325i, how is the service more expensive? Spark plugs are the ONLY
difference in the above mentioned comparisons.

Yep, the plugs were pricey at about $75 for 6 here in the San Francisco bay
area, where everything is expensive. As you said, all else was pretty much
the same as any other E36.

The only cost difference in servicing an E36 M3, over an E39 528i, is the
M3's spark plugs are a more expensive. All other costs should be identical,
or even cheaper.
