Yes, you can change it with a pair of adjustable spanners and a set of wire
cutters.
However, it's a pain in the butt.
Also, check into the cost of the complete cable, vs the "repair kit". It's
been my experience that the BST repair kit is more expensive than the entire
cable. If price is an issue and time is not, you may be better off
replacing the entire cable.
Note that you'll still need a trip to the dealer to clear the fault from the
MRS module after repairing the cable.

Thanks. Both price and time are an issue, but I don't relish the
thought of opening up everything to replace the cable. Nothing is
ever the same after an operation like that, so I think I'll try and
get hold of a repair kit.

What is a BST anyway??

The Battery Safety Terminal is a pyrotechnic device that disconnects
the high current starter circuit from the battery in the event of a
collission, in order to prevent possible short circuits and sparks.
It deploys at the same time as the airbags, sometimes unnecessarily on
some models.

Fortunately the BST is a very simple device, consisting of a
male-female jack that blow apart on deployment. To effect a temporary
repair all that was necessary was too remove the plastic BST cover and
re-insert the male side, which is the starter side, into the female on
the terminal. We finished with a cable tie to prevent the jack coming
loose too easily.
