Hi, my trunk will not oipen For some reason the lock will not open the
trunk. I turn the key and it turns freely, but will not open. Is there any
way for me to get into my trunk?

Thanks
Greg

I don't mean to be a dork, but did you try pushing the button in?  You
didn't specifically mention that.

(The lock is a button also)

I had one break like this. Managed to drill a small hole and pop the lock by
removing the license plate. I recommend you go to a used car lot and look at
a same year model to see where to drill. The little ear on the back of the
lock cylinder probably broke off.

I'm sorry, I must be missing something.

You drilled a hole in the sheet metal of the car?

Wouldn't it be wiser to simply drill out the lock cylinder?  Means spending
a couple of bucks on a new one, but it's better than damaging the integrity
of the vehicles corrosion protection.

If the ear on the back of the lock came off, he should still be able to
rotate the lock cylinder and push the button to unlock the car.  He didn't
specify if this is power locks or not, I'll assume not as it makes more
sense.  He hasn't mentioned what he feels when he tries to push it in... no
movement at all, partial binding movement, or free movement.  The only way I
could think of to create this situation where full rotation was possible and
full push was possible would be to bend the actually peice of the latch that
is actuateed by the cylinder when you push it.

I have experience only wth power, but I imagine it's the same for non-power
just without the connecting rod to the power actuator.  There are three
settings of the lock on power:  Unlocked, follow central lock state, and
locked.  Non power... unlock, lock, lock?

If the OP could specify for us:

1.  Power or not?
2.  Can it rotate through fully from the normal locked position to the
normal unlocked position?  Which with power is 2 full quarter turns?
3.  Can it be pushed in fully and easily in the position where it would
normally be unlocked?

Doug, thanks for responding, your problem sounds like what I have. I'm not
following the drill the hole thing. When I am looking for where to drill,
what am I looking for? What size hole and what should occur?

Thanks for everything

Hi All,

This is my first time posting a question on this group. I have 328 IS 1998
for 2 yr. It is the best car but a week ago I was coming back from work and
stopped on a signal light. I heard some noise coming from the passenger side
underneath the door. I pulled into a gas station to check, if anything is
broken. but i couldn't find anything. Everything was ok. Then to makesure
that the noise is stopped I started the car and left it in Park with my hand
brake up. there was no noise. Then, I tried the samething with hand brake
down. Samething no noise. Then, I sat in the car and put it in drive with
hand brake down and my foot on the brake. I heard something is radling
underneath the car on the passenger side. I couldn't figure out what it is?
If anyone can help me with this problem. I would appreciate it.

Could be a piece of gravel on top of a heat shield, or a loose heat
shield (for the catalytic converter).  When you put it in gear the torque
twists things enough to let them rattle.

I had a similar problem on an E36 (94 325i). We'd loaded a case of
wine in the trunk and on the way home we made a stop and could not
open the trunk. I figured I'd deal with it when we got home, but then
it opened.

I talked to my mechanic who explained that sometime something in the
trunk can be pushed up against the inside of the catch mechanism
causing it to fail. The solution is just to drive forward and hit the
brake hard.

Just another thought...
