I have not tried it in a BMW.

But I know from other brands that have a windscreeen with a thin metallic
coating in the glass that it blocks the GPS signal. In French cars there
typically is an area around the rear view mirror that does not have this
coating typically used to place the device for automatic billing systems on
pay roads in. However, the GPS reciever can also - with success - be placed
in such area if it exists on BMW.

Another solution could be to extend the cable (typically standard PC
keyboard cable) to reach to the back of the vehicle where the windows in the
back typically does not have this coating at all.
