I drive a 1998 528i and just this past weekend my wife got in the car and
attempted to adjust the seat to her liking and discovered the seat controls
no longer worked.  I subsequently discovered that the steering column
adjuster did not work either.  My first thought was the fuses (13 and 21)
which I have since tested and they are fine.  Everything else in the car is
working fine although my wife did note that the ASC warning light did come
on out of the middle of nowhere when she was on the highway.  It is fine now
though.  It clearly sounds like the typical BMW gremlins.  Does anyone have
any prior experiences as to how to fix?

Do you know if that is something I can do myself or must I take it in to
have it repaired?

SI 32 02 98.  Replace seat control unit and recode, replace steering column
up/down motor unless motor has a black plastic box and lid attached to it.
If it has metal box, plastic lid, replace it.
