Just got my first E39, 1997 2.8SE. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong
newsgroup.
I have an issue with the auto transmission - if I'm coasting, say coming up
to a junction, about 15 - 20mph, and I accelerate, often the drive doesn't
engage cleanly, so it just revs a bit, then engages suddenly and you get a
'jolt' before picking up speed and acting 'normally'.
Is this a known issue at all?
Thanks,
Lapchien.

I had a very similar problem on my E38. Was down to a fluid leak. I got my
local specalist to top it up (still havn't found the leak but since the top
up has been running well). Just the expensive bit now to find and fix the
leak!

This sounds like missing transmission fluid to me. Please read your
owners manual to find out how to check the ATF level (usually it is with
motor in idle, warm oil, car stands exactly leveled). The ATF level must
not be overfilled. Too much ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) can harm
the gearbox as much as too little ATF. When checking the ATF level you
should work extremely carefully and clean, use a fresh piece of dust free
cloth to clean the ATF dipstick. If you have the ATF dipstick at hand,
smell at the fluid. If the ATF smells burned, then you may have a worn
out gearbox. It is recommended to change the ATF from the gearbox every
80.000 miles, even if BMW tells you that no change is required. A regular
ATF change may save the life of your gearbox.

This is all nice, however E39 hasn't got the dipstick.
Probably the easiest to check is to drive to closest
BMW dealership, car has to be jacked up and it is very
important to use proper oil.

Could be, but then there would be other symptoms - as the fluid would have
to be so low as to be missing the pump pick up at times.
So it would be worse when cold - ATF expands as it heats up.
It would tend to lose drive on corners or hills due to surge.
My guess would be a sticking clutch.

Interesting - this is what TIS says about it, and this seems to be spot on.
