1991 325ci -- I recently rebuilt some components in the auto convertible
top system and now I can't figure out a way to get the power back on in
the system.  Have to open and close top manually.  Everything is back to
normal, but no power.

I know from my 325iC (german specs) that it has some sort of switch,
which stops the retracting mechanism as soon as the car is in motion
(found out during a very stupid situation at a red stoplight). Maybe this
switch has been disconnected in your car, so the roof electronics thinks
that the car is running.
